Typewriters. ATMs. AI?

What do the printing press, the typewriter, the ATM, and AI have in common? Every one sparked predictions of widespread job losses. The reality was far more interesting.

The Jobs We Count vs the Ones We Don’t

You book your flight.

You probably did it online.

AI may have suggested alternate dates, cheaper fares, or better connections.

Twenty-four hours before departure, you check in on your phone.

No baggage.

Digital boarding pass.

Seat assignment.

Maybe even an upgrade offer chosen just for you.

Check.

Then you get to the airport.

Someone directs passengers into the shortest security line.

Human.

The TSA officer checks your ID.

Human.

The boarding announcements start.

Human.

The gate agent scans your boarding pass.

Human.

You step onto the airplane.

A flight attendant smiles and says, "Good morning."

Human.

The cockpit door is open.

You wave at the captain.

Human.

You settle into your seat and look out the window.

A baggage cart pulls alongside the aircraft.

Humans.

A catering truck arrives.

Humans.

Someone connects the jet bridge.

Human.

Someone marshals the aircraft away from the gate with those glowing orange wands.

Human.

The fuel truck pulls away.

Humans.

The tug disconnects.

Human.

Then, finally, the airplane begins to move.

Funny thing.

We talk about AI as if it's replacing people.

But by the time you're settled into seat 17A, you've had only a handful of interactions with software and dozens with people.

And you've watched dozens more working behind the scenes.

That's because we have a habit of counting the visible job.

The chatbot.

The self-checkout.

The automated phone system.

We don't count the people who keep those systems running, improve them, monitor them, secure them, or step in when they fail.

They're just harder to see.

Visibility isn't the same as importance.

None of those people were replaced by the software that let you book your flight.

The software made the trip easier to plan.

The people made the trip happen.

We Count The Wrong Jobs

When people ask whether AI is replacing workers, they usually point to the most visible role.

The cashier.

The call center agent.

The travel agent.

The copywriter.

The bank teller.

That last one is interesting.

Remember when ATMs were going to eliminate bank tellers?

It sounded perfectly reasonable.

If people could withdraw cash, make deposits, and check their balances without talking to another person, why would banks still need tellers?

That's not what happened.

ATMs took over the routine transactions. Banks no longer needed someone standing behind a counter all day handing out twenties.

But banks didn't stop needing people.

Instead, the job changed.

Tellers spent less time counting cash and more time helping customers open accounts, resolve problems, answer questions, explain products, and handle the kinds of situations an ATM couldn't.

Something else happened, too.

Because ATMs made branches less expensive to operate, banks could afford to open more of them. Fewer tellers were needed in each branch, but there were more branches serving more communities.

The prediction wasn't entirely wrong.

The job changed.

What was wrong was the assumption that "this task can be automated" automatically meant "this job disappears."

Those aren't the same thing.

That's the trap.

We confuse tasks with jobs.

A job is usually dozens of tasks bundled together. Technology may automate one, five, or even half of them. That doesn't automatically eliminate the entire role. More often, it changes what people spend their time doing.

AI Isn't Different

Yesterday, it was the typewriter.

Then the ATM.

Today, it's AI.

Every generation gets a technology that's supposed to put everyone out of work.

Long before ATMs and typewriters, people worried that the printing press would change who worked, who wrote, and who controlled information.

It also created entirely new industries, new professions, and a world where ideas could travel farther and faster than ever before.

The story was much bigger than the prediction.

We're watching the same conversation play out again.

Every week there's another headline predicting that AI will replace writers, programmers, designers, customer service representatives, accountants, or project managers.

Some of those predictions may prove accurate.

Some won't.

But history suggests the first headline is rarely the whole story.

We're asking the wrong first question.

Instead of asking, "Which jobs will disappear?"

We should also be asking:

What parts of those jobs are changing?

What new responsibilities appear around the technology?

Who reviews the output?

Who catches the mistakes?

Who trains the models?

Who decides when the AI shouldn't be trusted?

Who is accountable when it gets something wrong?

The work doesn't always disappear.

It moves.

It changes.

It multiplies in places we weren't looking.

That's the work we almost never count.

 

The New Work Is Already Here

You don't have to imagine it.

Companies adopting AI today are hiring people to:

  • evaluate AI output
  • write governance policies
  • monitor quality
  • manage vendors
  • integrate AI into existing systems
  • train employees
  • review security and privacy risks
  • test new models before deployment

Ten years ago, many of those jobs barely existed.

Today, they're becoming part of doing business.

None of those people are replacing AI.

They're making AI useful.

 

Count The Whole System

When a new technology arrives, we naturally notice the jobs it touches first.

They're visible.

They're easy to count.

The harder question is what happens around the technology after the headlines fade.

History suggests that's where the bigger story usually is.

We counted the ATM.

We almost missed what happened to the teller.

We're counting the chatbot.

Let's not make the same mistake twice.

 

We count what's easy to see.

Sometimes the biggest change is what we stop seeing.

The next time you board a flight, look around.

You might discover the biggest part of the system was there all along.

You just weren't counting it.
